Many people who engage in businesses run from home do so at what could really be called a hobby level. The various tax authorities of western countries all pretty much allow a certain latitude for activities run from home that also make some income, but not much. The US IRS and the Australian ATO amongst others have limits of how much can be earned and still remain in the hobby realm.

This is what the Australian Taxation Office says about whether you are a business or a hobby:

“How do I tell whether I am in business?

There is no simple answer to whether you are in business or not, it depends upon the facts in each case. However, you can use the following questions to help you determine whether your activity is actually a business:Does your activity have a significant commercial purpose or character?

Do you have more than just an intention to engage in business?

Do you have a purpose of profit as well as a prospect of profit?

Is there repetition and regularity to your activity?

Is your activity carried on in a similar manner to other businesses in your industry?

Is your activity planned, organised and carried on in a business-like manner?

Does your activity have characteristics of size, scale and permanency?

Would it be true to say your activity is really better described as a business, rather than a hobby, recreation or sporting activity?

Each time you answered ‘yes’ to the questions above, it increases the probability that you are in business though no one indicator is decisive, they must be considered in combination and as a whole.”

The Internal Revenue Service of the USA says;

“Generally, an activity qualifies as a business if it is carried on with the reasonable expectation of earning a profit.In order to make this determination, taxpayers should consider the following factors:

Does the time and effort put into the activity indicate an intention to make a profit?

Does the taxpayer depend on income from the activity?

If there are losses, are they due to circumstances beyond the taxpayer’s control or did they occur in the start-up phase of the business?

Has the taxpayer changed methods of operation to improve profitability?

Does the taxpayer or his/her advisors have the knowledge needed to carry on the activity as a successful business?

Has the taxpayer made a profit in similar activities in the past?

Does the activity make a profit in some years?

Can the taxpayer expect to make a profit in the future from the appreciation of assets used in the activity?

The IRS presumes that an activity is carried on for profit if it makes a profit during at least three of the last five tax years, including the current year – at least two of the last seven years for activities that consist primarily of breeding, showing, training or racing horses.”

As you can see, both tax authorities have very similar ideas of what is a business and what is a hobby. HM Revenue and Customs of the UK is a little more confusing and approaches the issue in several ways, including hobby trades, pet breeding and so on.

Basically though the same thinking prevails. If it is part time, done for fun and barely covers costs then it is most likely a hobby and income derived is not taxable. Of course in that case it often means the expenses incurred are not tax deductible, either.

One of the benefits of being in business is the deductions you can claim for legitimate business related expenses. You can also usually claim a lower rate of tax on profits than you would if that income was salary. A business can run at a loss for several years and depending on the business format, indefinitely in some cases.

Think hard whether your home based business is a true business or a paying hobby. Always get professional advice on all accountancy and tax matters and never, ever try to rip off the Taxman. You will get caught and it is never worth it. The system is there to be used but not abused and there are more than enough ways you can pay your share of tax and not a cent more. Be creative, not criminal.

In my previous article I wrote about Unique Search terms and how they can help your advert, in this article I am going to write about another powerful feature that many Business to Business Directories offer:

Banners

When you go on to a Business Directory and start searching for companies, you may come across an animated Banner above the list of companies when you type in a product or service you are looking for. These are called banners; companies with adverts can purchase a banner and a set of unique terms that attach to the banner. It is essentially an animated flash file; the designers will take images and text from your own website and incorporate it into the Banner.

Once you have purchased one you will be asked to pick some terms (the amount depends on what you have agreed with the directory), these terms will belong to you for the duration of your contract and no one else will be able to purchase them.

Say you pick Mezzanine Flooring…Whenever some one goes to the directory and types ‘Mezzanine Flooring’ you banner will flash up at the top of the page above all of the companies that offer that product, this encourages people to click on your listing instead of others.

Whilst it does not have the power of the ‘Search Terms’ to get you world wide coverage, it is still a very effective method of drawing extra traffic into your advert and will increase the potential leads you receive.

If you aren’t asking questions, you are not going to get any answers. Although that may seem like a rather simplistic statement, there really is a lot of truth behind it. Questions are fundamental in increasing our knowledge, regardless of whether it is for personal gain or if it is for the gain of our business. For that reason, you often see that businesses are running surveys, both of their employees and of their customers. Keep on moving

Make it a daily challenge to find ways to move your body Climb stairs if given a choice between that and escalators or elevators. Anything that moves your limbs is not only a fitness tool, it is a stress buster. Move should be your mantra. It does not have to be an hour in the gym or a 45 minutes aerobic dance class or karate. But that is great when you are up to it. Meanwhile, keep moving one way or the other.

Watch out for Fats

Avoid the obvious such as fried foods, burgers and other fatty meats. Dairy products such as cheese, cottage cheese, milk and cream should be eaten in low fat versions. Nuts and sandwich meats, mayonnaise, margarine, butter and sauces should be eaten in limited amounts. Always be conscious of what you put into your body.

Drop the smokes

Have you ever noticed the small writing across a cigarette pack that says smoking is harmful to your health? Take heed it is not sales gimmick. Adverts may say it is cool to light up but you tell what is cool about getting cancer. Besides it is bad for you breath and nobody is really interested in seeing you cough all day. Drop a cigarette a day.

Keep on smiling

There is a definitive connection between living well and healthfully and having a cheerful outlook. Besides it takes fewer muscles in the face to generate a smile, so that translates to everlasting youth.

Avoid Excessive drinking

One or two drinks will do. With low consumption level, alcohol is actually good for control of heart disease. Excessive drinking comes with a bandwagon of complications. Try and limit your drinking to the weekends. For every hour, drink a single bottle of beer and if you find yourself drinking too fast, use a straw. It sounds silly until you try it out.

Hang around like-minded people

The more friends you have who understands the importance of keeping healthy the better. They become your pillars whenever you lack the drive and your inspiration to never give up.

Floss your teeth

Flossing is something you need to get used to, but it works and it is great for your teeth. It leaves your teeth sparkling clean, reaches corners your toothbrush never ventures and get rid of all bad breath.

Business process analyst resume:The business process analyst should highlight his ability to detect errors in the business process, detect defects and then work towards a zero defect process. His skills and experience should reflect this ability. Thus if the flow of the content, the narration and accuracy in the resume is not good, it creates a negative impression on the employer.

Business system analyst:

A business system analyst researches the problems and gives solution to the software and systems in the company. He coordinates with the people who use the systems and software, who design them and analyze them. Their focus is to monitor the system and technology that facilitates the smooth running of the process and the entire business.
